Is tramadol good for an older dog?

Carmelia

I have a mix breed dog, probably lab mix or something and she is about 15-16 years old and walks very stiff and sometimes acts drunk. Recently we decided to put her on pain medication for her arthritis and any discomfort she may be having. She was prescribed Tramadol 50 mg 3 times a day. Just curious if anyone has any knowledge if this particular medication? Since she has been taking it, we feel that her condition is worse? I think it makes her drowsy?? Is it suppose to make the dog drowsy? ANY INPUT WILL HELP! Thanks

Dalila

It will make dogs drowsy usually. It is a good anti-inflammatory med. Safer to me than Rimadyl especially for a lab or golden mix. I would give it at least 1 - 2 wk to see how dog does. If you feel it isn't helping, call the vet & tell them.

Sorry I don;t know about the meds you are using but look for a senior dog food with the hip supplements in it and she will get better. Zukes hip action is a great meaty treat for her also. I have fed both and seen a big difference in my senior dogs.

Try giving it just twice a day and see if it makes a difference. It can cause drowsiness, but it also relieves her pain, which is very important. She might also be sleeping better because her pain isn't as bad. Old dogs do sleep a lot. As long as she is eating well,I wouldn't worry too much. It can cause constipation, though,so maybe a little more fiber in her diet ( sweet potatoes are good). And yes,I have had dogs take it,and my cousin's old Labrador takes it as well. It helps him tremendously with his spinal arthritis.

Tramadol is an opioid, it works by affecting pain receptors in the dog's brain. If you feel she is worse, or acting too drowsy, call your vet as the dose may need to be adjusted. Your dog should be feeling more comfortable with Tramadol, but not to the point of being sedated.

If you feel its not working, just contact your vet againTramadol works by stimulating the mu receptor, which provides pain relief without sedation and without addiction. Some Side Effects and ContraindicationsLike all drugs, tramadol has side effects, although they are usually mild. There is a wide range of possible dosing with this drug, and sedation sometimes can occur at higher doses; if this happens, it is recommended that the dosage be reduced.Constipation can occur rarely in some dogs, and will resolve when the drug is discontinued.Although tramadol does not harm the gastrointestinal lining as NSAID drugs can, it can cause nausea. This is rare.Contraindications include dogs who are being treated with L-Deprenyl for Cushings or cognitive disorders, or dogs taking serotonin reuptake inhibitors, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or certain antidepressant medications.Note: The human drug Ultracet is a combination of Ultram (tramadol) and Tylenol (acetaminophen). This drug must not be given to animals.FeaturesUnlike NSAIDs, tramadol can be taken with steroids. It can also be taken with NSAIDs to provide additional pain relief and allow a lower dose of both drugs to be used.Tramadol is a prescription human medication and will require a prescription from a veterinarian. It is not a controlled substance and no special paperwork is required to prescribe, stock, or dispense this medication in veterinary practice.Tramadol is not passed to nursing puppies through the dam's milk so can be used for pain control in lactating bitches.I heard from a sydney australia vet online, that Sasha Blend is suppost to be very good for joints. You might want to give this joint remendy ago.www.sashasblend.com.au/cb_pages/s

Is it normal for dogs to get upset stomach from tramadol?

Ellen

My 11 year old Rottweiler, Belle, is on Tramadol for her arthritis. She's been on it for about 4-5 months, and is now taking nearly 9 pills a day. Recently she has started having an upset stomach, and vomits. Is this a normal reaction after being on this medicine for this long?Should I contact my vet?

Christine

Vomiting and gastrointestinal upset has been described with this medication, but it is more common to see sleepiness and dizziness. It is possible, if she is dizzy, that it could interfere with her equilibrium which could make her nauseous. I would definitely contact your vet who will likely do some bloodwork to make sure her liver or kidneys are not affected. An additional therapy that may be very successful with arthritic dogs is Adequan injections. Adequan is a substance that is naturally found in joint tissue and when it is given by injection, it goes into a joint and thickens the fluid so the bone is not scraping on bone as much (osteoarthritis). The injections are expensive but can be life-changing. I have seen tremendous success with multiple dogs. If you have financial difficulties, your vet may be willing to give you a discounted rate if you buy your own bottle from them and just come in for the injection. The best way to administer it is twice weekly for up to 8 injections then as needed to maintain comfort. Good luck to you - hope she feels much better!

Christen

You should contact the vet. Some meds can wear the lining of the stomach.

Daine

Yes, contact your vet ASAP! Your dog is taking a high dose of the med and it may just need to be adjusted.
