Does anyone have the knowledge of using tramadol or piroxicam for their dogs? is it safe to use? side effects?

Vicki

tramadol can be used in dogs it is a useful drug especially for treating bone cancers and certain conditions in dogs arthritis chronic pain, and after surgery, piroxicam is not licensed for use in animals its for human use only in dogs it causes severe stomach problems and after trials will not be licensed for use in animals

Please contact a vet before starting any type of medication for your dog to get the proper dosage as well as to make sure that the dog is healthy and able to metabolize the drugs properly without any effects. Good luck

What are you using it for? Tramadol is used by the weight, and should be prescription only. We had it for our Maltese after her surgery. It can depress their respiration and cause severe respiratory depression if you give too much. You have to be very careful with the doseage. The dose they gave our dog to begin with was the correct dose for her weight but she went out like a light and was out for a long time. When they sent us home they told us we could give it to her every 8 hours as needed, and we gave her about 1/2 the dosage they recommended because it was too strong and we couldn't get her to wake up to eat. If it wasn't prescribed for the dog you are asking for, don't use it. It is for pain. It is not for people with liver or kidney disease, but it was given to us for our dog with liver disease, so I guess since it was short term it was okay. It must not process out of the liver easily and humans would overdose on it perhaps. She only needed a few doses over the first few days, maybe 4 or 5 doses total, and seems to have been okay with it, but I wouldn't use it unless prescribed and needed for extreme pain. (our dog had surgery and her whole belly had been cut open.

I would use the NSAID first before trying tramadol. It is supposed to be non-narcotic, but it is related to morphine. What is the problem with your dog?

If you have pain and take lortab 10 2x a day would it be good to supplement ultram tramadol in between?

Heidy

Tramadol is a derivative of Morphine. That means it is similar to heroin. Taking this drug on a regular casual basis could lead to some form of addiction.Try something else instead.

Carson

If your pain level is greater than the meds your doctor gives you, consider seeing a pain management specialist. You should never dose up like that - you're going to become just another addict...

Can anyone tell me where to get tramadol 5mg liquid for my dog my vet is unable to obtain any ?

Chieko

I have a dog on it now in the uk. He is on tablet form, and the one he is on is a human drug and I have to sign for it.Not sure if the liquid is a canine version or not. I was also told that it would make my dog drowsy, but hasn't been too bad, especially as he needs to be kept quiet.

Jaye

Why is your vet unable to get this? Beware - my ****** was put on this and it completely zonked her out.... she was on a major trip. She came off it - fast. So if he's 'unable to get any' this may be sending you a message? (UK - btw)

Ester

Ask your vet if he can write you a prescription and get it at a chemist some vets do that for medicine.

Lanita

In the US you are only able to obtain it from a medical dr. by prescription only. That medication can actually be habit forming.

Adena

Well a country would be helpful.

I have had 2 dogs on it, but both on the tablets. Never had one on liquid. I'm in the us. I just crused the pills and mixed it with their food, they ate it fine.

Only a vet can give you Tramadol. Vets can obtain it at any time and I'm sure they always have it available in their office. I know my vet does. If a vet thinks your dog needs Tramadol, he or she will prescribe it. If you did take your dog to the vet and they did not give you Tramadol for whatever reason you think your dog needs it, then the reason your vet did not give you any for your dog, is probably because the vet doesn't think it will help your dog or that your dog needs it.
