Is it ok to taper off vicoden with tramadol?

I need to get off vicoden, I've been on it for 2 years for chronic neck and lower back pain. Is it OK to take tramadol instead? I heard its not really a narcotic and it helps with the pain. I'm in pain most of the time and when I try to stop the vicoden I usually just give in to the pain. If anyone has any other suggestions, I would gladly try anything....

Tramadol works wonderful for coming off of vicodin. I have done it myself. Tramadol is non- narcotic but it still acts on the opiate receptors. Therefore you will hav great pain relief and no withdrawal pains. Good luck!!

I have taken several different pain medications, and Tramadol is one of the most unique. The transition to Tramadol would be a good discussion to have with your doctor, it involves weeks of transitioning, depending on the length of time you have taken opiates, in your case two years, which is a lengthy period, and this will require special attention. I personally love Tramadol for my pain. It is long lasting. It is not as popular among street users because large doses will cause seizures. It is also a wait for it,wait for it kind of pill. The effects of it are present, but the pain relief and mild euphoria takes a while to present itself. It will elevate your mood because of the SSRI properties that it contains. I am not sure why this drug was formulated this way, some research shows that it was supposed to be the ultimate happy pill. Consult your doc, and I wish you the best.

Why don't you talk to a real expert. I am sure that none of the other answers have has 8-12 years of medical training. I am sure none of them have had any experience in anesthesiology. I haven't either, but I am sure your doctor has.If you try to do this on your own you take a big chance that your pain level goes up. You take a chance that any drug test you might have to take in the future you would fail unless all the meds are from legal prescriptions. I know that sometimes it gets real frustrating, especially with all of the bad press about drugs. I have been on narcotics for pain for 18 years. I presently have a pain pump installed under my skin, and it works great. am not saying you should get one, but you should talk to your doctor and follow his advice. If you think he is wrong, and he could be, find another doctor for a second opinion. Your entire future is resting on your decision. I hope you make the right one for you.pp

Tramadol is a perfectly good pain med and it might be appropriate for your situation depending on the reason you're discontinuing the vicodin.There are plenty of good pain meds available and a good doctor will review the pros and cons with you. If you want to go completely non-narcotic there are medicines like diclofenac (a personal favorite) and celebrex. But don't think you're going to find one that doesn't have side effects, some being quite dangerous in certain situations. Tramadol is sometimes a good choice because it doesn't contain acetaminophen which can wreck your liver with long term use.

Tramadol is a synthetic opiate with SSRI properties. (It is a very misunderstood and understated medication).At any rate,.. you are in pain, and are in need of relief.You need to speak with your doctor and talk to him about managing chronic pain. Using short acting opiates, like hydrocodone, is *not* appropriate treatment for chronic pain. It is intended for short term, acute pain. In fact, using short term opiates often (over time) causes hyperalgesia -- (an increased sensitivity to pain) which then complicates matter more due to the individual not being able to accurately gauge their *true* level of pain.Ultram in place of hydrocodone is 'ok' -- but you need to keep it in the recommended dosages per day. However, be aware -- tramadol/ultram can and does cause dependence as well. It isn't like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.. it does have properties that can cause dependence and even addiction in susceptible individuals.As I mentioned above, this is really something you need to discuss with your doctor -- your treatment and management of your chronic pain should be much better handled. There are many varying methods to treat spinal pain.. look into the options available.

Tramadol is a derivative of Morphine. That means it is similar to heroin. Taking this drug on a regular casual basis could lead to some form of addiction.Try something else instead.

Could seven hundred mg possibly be an ok dose? I am still in pain even at this strength but it beats the alternative! only take what is prescribed on the bottle.tramadol is a low dose pain medication, (the least addictive narcotic of them all) and if you have a lot of pain there are many other medications out there your doctor can put you on. you don't want to risk a seizure or other effects to your body.please call & make an appointment w/ your doctor asap!!!

It's either 400 mgs or 800 mgs, I'm not sure which. I think 400, though. Anything above that and you're at a greater risk for seizures.

You should only take, what it Say's on the bottle of medication...if the pain medication isn't working for you, you need to go back to the doctor and let him know...maybe there is something else he can prescribe.....good luck

I think I saw your question earlier that you were concerned that you were addicted to Ultram (tramadol). That is possible infact there has been some speculation that it could possibley be changed to a controled medication. If you are still having pain after taking the reccomened dose call your Doctor. You may need to have something else for your pain. Tell your Doctor your concerns about tramadol being addictive. That way they can work with you in prescribing medication to help you.

I have some friends who are taking some kind of pain killer which is called tramadol, and they are using it for pleasure.while being under it's effect they seem to be thinking normally but they talk slowly, and their reflexes are slow also.and their eyes look strange.they take 2 pills daily each is 100mg which makes it 200 mg daily.I don't know what to do, is it dangerous? should I tell their parents and let them stop it by force or should I try to talk to them to stop it peacefully?

Two pills a day does not make an addiction. Tramadol is a moderate non-narcotic pain reliever that comes in 50mg tablets. Should your friends be abusing prescription drugs? No they shouldn't. I am guessing that they have access to someones prescription and will probably run out of pills soon. I can not tell you if you should or should not rat them out to their parents. You are there and I am here, you have the inside view on what is happening and how they are reacting. I will say this, friends usually tend to get really pissed off when they are unnecessarily ratted on by their friends. So, make sure you are not being over-reactive, but do what ya have to do if they ramp up their irresponsible behavior and become a danger to themselves. if their reflexes are slow would you want them driving? would they be able to stop quickly if a child ran out in front of their car? would they be able to react if one of their friends were hurt or sick? All addictions are serious and scary. I know it is hard to tell their parents and risk losing a friend but think how horrible you would feel if something happened to one of them.

Being that I took tramadol 50mg tablets on a regular basis for a back issue I think that your friends should seek some kind of drug treatment. Using this drug for pleasure and not it's intended purpose is dangerous, and that really goes for any drug. I was advised when taking my pills that anymore than 8 tablets in one day could cause seizures and other neurological problems. People are becoming addicted to tramadol because it makes you feel good, and it's a low dose. I think first you should try to talk to your friends about this and if they don't stop themselves then I would go to their parents. You should also find out if one of them has a prescription to be taking this medication because if they don't then it's considered to be illegal for them to be using it. In some states tramadol is a class 4 narcotic which is in the same category as vicodin.
