Ultram (tramadol is the generic name) is a narcotic because it blocks the mu-opioid receptor. This is the exact same mechanism of action as morphine, codeine, etc. The main difference is that tramadol is not addictive and isn't associated with quite the same side effects (respiratory depression, bradycardia, constipation).

Ultram or Tramadol is NOT a narcotic. Go to 10 different sites and at least 3 will call it a narcotic. The other 7 will call it non-narcotic. I don't want it to become considered a narcotic.
