Is it ok to taper off vicoden with tramadol?

I need to get off vicoden, I've been on it for 2 years for chronic neck and lower back pain. Is it OK to take tramadol instead? I heard its not really a narcotic and it helps with the pain. I'm in pain most of the time and when I try to stop the vicoden I usually just give in to the pain. If anyone has any other suggestions, I would gladly try anything....

Tramadol works wonderful for coming off of vicodin. I have done it myself. Tramadol is non- narcotic but it still acts on the opiate receptors. Therefore you will hav great pain relief and no withdrawal pains. Good luck!!

I have taken several different pain medications, and Tramadol is one of the most unique. The transition to Tramadol would be a good discussion to have with your doctor, it involves weeks of transitioning, depending on the length of time you have taken opiates, in your case two years, which is a lengthy period, and this will require special attention. I personally love Tramadol for my pain. It is long lasting. It is not as popular among street users because large doses will cause seizures. It is also a wait for it,wait for it kind of pill. The effects of it are present, but the pain relief and mild euphoria takes a while to present itself. It will elevate your mood because of the SSRI properties that it contains. I am not sure why this drug was formulated this way, some research shows that it was supposed to be the ultimate happy pill. Consult your doc, and I wish you the best.

Why don't you talk to a real expert. I am sure that none of the other answers have has 8-12 years of medical training. I am sure none of them have had any experience in anesthesiology. I haven't either, but I am sure your doctor has.If you try to do this on your own you take a big chance that your pain level goes up. You take a chance that any drug test you might have to take in the future you would fail unless all the meds are from legal prescriptions. I know that sometimes it gets real frustrating, especially with all of the bad press about drugs. I have been on narcotics for pain for 18 years. I presently have a pain pump installed under my skin, and it works great. am not saying you should get one, but you should talk to your doctor and follow his advice. If you think he is wrong, and he could be, find another doctor for a second opinion. Your entire future is resting on your decision. I hope you make the right one for you.pp

Tramadol is a perfectly good pain med and it might be appropriate for your situation depending on the reason you're discontinuing the vicodin.There are plenty of good pain meds available and a good doctor will review the pros and cons with you. If you want to go completely non-narcotic there are medicines like diclofenac (a personal favorite) and celebrex. But don't think you're going to find one that doesn't have side effects, some being quite dangerous in certain situations. Tramadol is sometimes a good choice because it doesn't contain acetaminophen which can wreck your liver with long term use.

Tramadol is a synthetic opiate with SSRI properties. (It is a very misunderstood and understated medication).At any rate,.. you are in pain, and are in need of relief.You need to speak with your doctor and talk to him about managing chronic pain. Using short acting opiates, like hydrocodone, is *not* appropriate treatment for chronic pain. It is intended for short term, acute pain. In fact, using short term opiates often (over time) causes hyperalgesia -- (an increased sensitivity to pain) which then complicates matter more due to the individual not being able to accurately gauge their *true* level of pain.Ultram in place of hydrocodone is 'ok' -- but you need to keep it in the recommended dosages per day. However, be aware -- tramadol/ultram can and does cause dependence as well. It isn't like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.. it does have properties that can cause dependence and even addiction in susceptible individuals.As I mentioned above, this is really something you need to discuss with your doctor -- your treatment and management of your chronic pain should be much better handled. There are many varying methods to treat spinal pain.. look into the options available.

Had wisdom teeth pulled out and am now out of hydrocodone but have some tramadol. Is it about the same strength or would taking tylenol or something else be better. Was taking 5/500mg of hydrocodone/APAP every 4 hours.

Tramadol and Hydrocodone both work on the same receptors in the brain to block pain. In my opinion Tramadol is just as good for pain. The only difference between the two that I have found is that Tramadol does not give you the euphoric feeling that hydrocodone does. Tramadol is more likely to cause seizures though, so you might want to be careful with that. Also, do not take these two medications together.

If you are still in a lot of pain you should contact the responsible surgeon and get more hydrocodone. Tramadol might help. It's pretty much an individual response. Hydrocodone is more reliable than tramadol but it might meet your needs perfectly. Never the less, the doctor needs to keep you supplied with medication if his/her work is causing you pain.

I agree with both of the previous answer's to some extent. For wisdom teeth, I would say 50mg of Tramadol every 6 hours with 2 Extra Strength Tylenol 2 hours after each dose of Tramadol. That means 200mg daily and a couple thousand mg's of Tylenol until the worst of it subsides. I get more euphoria from Tramadol then Hydro's because I grew a tolereance to traditional opiates. Tramadol is not at all traditional, its a unique pill. I suggest you ask your doctor, but Tramadol works great for me, but its just not as popular with pill seekers.

Hi, I am on my husbands account. You should be fine. Probably need to talk to your doctor though. I think the ones on the Cat C safe list are Vicodin and Balacet/Darvocet. Tramadol works by messing with neurotransmitters in your brain. Other opioids work by messing with pain receptors. It is thought that Vicodin and Balacet are the safest ones to use during pregnancy although no studies have been done on pregnant women. No reports have been issued to the contrary either. I do not like a book|like the book if there have been reports of tramadol issues. I have taken Tramadol & Amitriptilene for my FM and was advised to avoid alcohol. I know everyone is different but I had too many side effects with even a low dose of the amitriptilene to continue taking it, however, my friend is on a high dose and she doesn't have any.

You should avoid alcohol with both these drugs. With regards to Tramadol and Amitriptyline, these drugs can interact. Have you been prescribed these drugs to take together? There is an increased risk of seizures during co-administration of tramadol with SSRI's If it were, me I'd check with the pharmacist. Certainly this combination should be monitored closely.

I believe it's best to avoid drinking with most medication of this sort, particularly the Tramadol, which when given to one of my dogs, spaced her out big time. I guess it depends on how much of a bender you intend to go on for your 60th really. How effective is tramadol for back pain?

I am a nurse and have had fibromylagia for many years. I take tramadol about thirty minutes prior to getting up in the morning so that I can get ready for work. I am very stiff in the morning and have a somewhat shuffled gait because my legs and muscles hurt so bad. I also hurt in my upper back/neck area. If I don't take the tramadol and allow it to get into my stystem then it takes forever to get ready because I am in so much pain. My hair is very long and I have to blow dry it for about 20 minutes. If I didn't take the tramadol then I would not be able to hold my arms up for that length of time. It has saved my life. It doesn't get rid of my pain 100% but NOTHING ever gets rid of my pain 100%. It has no adverse side effects on me except I can't take it after about 6pm because it keeps me awake at night. I do not feel high or anything like that on this medication. It just helps me function thorugh the day with minimal pain. I have tried the oxycodones,hydrocodones,etc. They make me feel high,sleepy and just bad. I still sometimes have to take a hydrocodone if I am having an acute flare up but I don't have to take it often. If I do take it then I don't work while I take it and I don't drive. Tramadol allows me to still function as a nurse without the side effects of the other pain meds. Some people say that it was no better than a tylenol for them. Like all meds, it just effects people in different ways. Those people may have more pain than I do.Without the tramadol on a pain scale of 1 to 10 my rating is about a 7 in the morning before taking it; after I have taken it then my rating is about a 3 which I can tolerate. It has been my life saver. If I could not take it then I would have to go on disability becasue I could not function without it. I have had some patients that complained that they still hurt after taking a hydrocodone; the MD changed them to tramadol and it worked wonders on them. (I work with geriatric (elderly) patients). I think some people think because it is not a schduled narcotic then it is not a good pain medication. NOT TRUE. It works well for some and not at all for others. It does have a minimal potential for addiction as do most pain medications. Another plus is that the ultram(brand name for tramadol) doesn't contain tylenol which is heck on your liver. The ultracet(brand name for tramadol with tylenol) does contain tylenol. I take the one without tylenol. The hydrocodones have tylenol as does the percocets. People do not realize the harmful effects that tylenol have on your liver. I try to avoid tylenol at any cost.Try to tramadol ,if it works for you then great. It is a wonder drug and a life saver for a lot of people. If it doesn't relieve your pain then I would let my MD know it is not effective and he will need to try a differnt type of med. If it is a pulled muscle the you may need to use a muscle relaxer for a short time period. Also try warm moist heat to the area 3 to 4 times a day for 20 minutes at a time. This will help too. Hope you feel better soon and hope the tramadol works as well for you as it has for me. If not then do not hesitate to let your doctor know. Good Luck.

However, pain medication reacts differently with different people, so I think it's worth a try. If you don't get results, there are plenty of other pain medications on the market.

It's a centrally acting synthetic analgesic compound prescribed for moderate to moderately severe pain. Every pain med. has a different effect on different people. I've had some patients for whom it works. Personally, it was prescribed for me and it made me nervous and jumpy...but that's me.When it comes to pain medication, you have to let your doc. know what, if any, side effects you are having when you are taking a new med. And If it is not effective in relieving your pain, then you need to communicate this to your doc. Communication is key.

If you are talking about muscle pain in your back it works ok, if it is pain from a spine injury or a nerve it's not very good. It won't help much more that ES Tylenol. It's listed as a moderate to severe pain medication but I've found it to be pretty worthless. I've been on it a few times in the past. I know I wouldn't bother taking it over Tylenol and I've been dealing with pain for a long time!!If your doctor puts you on it then try it,,, it must help some people. But don't get your hopes up. I take two a day for back pain and it works very well. You can become dependant BUT the withdrawl is mild and if u really are hurting the chance of dependancy is slim to none. They are not generally a street drug because there is not really a high with tramadol, lowering the chance for abuse. Funny enough, I have TMJ severely and I take this medicine as well. It works very well for me. I don't see myself ever becoming addicted, but then again, it can happen. I don't see it as a street drug, ever. It's just not a strong enough narcotic like street people look for. And, as somebody stated above, it isn't a scheduled drug. My moher, who suffers from osteoarthritis has recently been told she can now no longer take any voltarol or coproxamol as it is affecting her kidneys. She has now been prescribed tramadol but is a little fearful with all the side affects and worried about its addictability. Coproxamol has been off the market for several years in the UK. Vicodin is another illogical mix of hydrocodone and paracetamol, it is not available in the UK. Tramadol is a reasonably potent opiate analogue with a fairly low potential for addiction.

I was on Tramadol when I had Glandular Fever and had Migraines with it.It was very good at managing the pain, but I found that it just knocked me out more than dealt with the pain. Though when I would wake up the pain would be bearable.You mother really needs to speak to her doctor about this.I think Tramadol would be less addicting, though both of them are addictive drugs. There are people who respond well to Tramadol and those who don't feel anything. For me, Tramadol rocks. I love them. They make me feel real good (high), and not all spacey like Vicodin. I am 28 and have a knee replacement from arthritis. My doctor has no problem at all prescribing me Tramadol. I don't know if my doctor would prescribe Vicodin. Doctors are VERY weary about Vicodin for osteoarthritis. It is very addictive.
