Has anyone used tramadol on their dogs?

George

I just got back from the vets office. The vet prescribed Tramadol Liquid, for my 6 pound Chihuahua, because of a bad leg, and told me to give her 0.5 ML orally twice a day. I gave her 0.5 ML at 1:00 p.m. and she's sleeping now. Does Tramadol make them drowsy? Has anyone had any bad reactions in their dogs, from taking Tramadol, that I should look for or be aware of in mine? Did it help your dog and how? Thanks!

Jeanmarie

Tramadol will make the dog drowsy so until he gets used to the medicine, he will probably be sleeping a lot. The only side effect I know of is VERY RARE and really only happens if you give the dog too much of the medicine at one time- which is seizures, so just make sure you give the directed dose and write on your calender or on a piece of paper on the fridge what time and day you gave it to the dog- that way you keep track and don't accidently give an extra dose. Most animals do not have any side effects from the medicine, but sometimes an upset stomach can occur. Here is a link to more about it- I always like to look up what my dog is taking to make sure:b-naturals.com/May2005.phpAlso, if your dog is under severe sedation- like cannot be woken up with a simple shake- you should contact the vet.I really wouldn't worry about it though because side effects are rare with this medicine.

Bernadette

George B was wrong. It is not a morphine based drug. It is a synthetic mu agonist that somehow binds to the opioid receptor sites just like morphine, but it has a different chemical structure. The right dose (not too much) can really make your pooch active again if they have chronic joint pain.

Karly

I don't know about using it on dogs, but I'm prescribed Tramadol for chronic pain from a ruptured disc in my back. I know it makes some humans sleepy, so I would imagine it would make a little chihuahua very sleepy. I would watch his breathing, just to make sure the doseage isn't too strong for him. If he seems like he's struggling to breathe, or his breaths aren't deep enough, call the vet. In humans, taking too much Tramadol can cause breathing issues.

Eleonor

My dalmation was prescribed Tramadol for pain, as Metacam gave him diahrrea. He was exhibiting obvious pain behaviour, but we couldn't determine the cause. It made him really wonky.. You could tell just by looking at him that he was doped up. I worried that he was going to fall asleep standing up! But it worked.. He had three doses, and the next day was moving around again beautifully.

Debrah

Tramadol will make your dog sleepy.like any other medications you have to make sure your dog has some food with it, if you over dose or give too much it can affect the liver.Tramadol helped a lot. didn't need it after a while, but, be careful on how much u give, and just watch for anything that may seem like an allergic reaction, like itching, or any breathing problems.

Cristin

Hi, I too take Tramadol for chronic pain and it makes me sleepy and kinda dopes me up so I imagine it would have the same affect on your Chi. It helps me alot though, I hope it helps your girl too. The suggestion about logging dosage times is excellent. That way if there is a siezure or another reaction you can pinpoint it quickly should Dr ask. Also to the ****** that said arsenic, that was just plain mean and as far as I am concerned you should be reported. I'll never understand why people on here have to be like that, don't you guys have anything better to do with your time??? Hope your Chi gets to feeling better soon. Best wishes!

Matilda

I don't know about using Tramadol with a dog but I use it daily for severe back and hip pain and it does cause drowsiness. This is just a side effect and as your pet adjusts to the medication, the effects should lessen. I hope this is helpful

Leeanne

I lost one of my German Shepherds a few months ago & the vet had him on Tramadol for two weeks prior to his death! It did help relieve the pain so that he could rest! Good Luck to you!

Chi

Must have been a pretty bad leg injury. Tramadol is a morphine based drug with a strong sedative in it. Yes thats how they act, the whole point is to alleviate pain and keep them immobile. continue as prescribed. I know there expensive but shes undoubtably in pain or the vet would`nt have prescribed that.

How can i find out if tramadol is suitable for vicodin withdrawal?

Chantell

currently dependent on vicodin. is tramadol an opiate also? i am trying to decrease.

Joella

Not really the same thing. You can safely call your pharmacy, or any pharmacy, and ask any question without telling them your name. Do not say that you are dependent on vicodin, as they will not want to discuss this issue. You can quit taking vicodin completely, it is not very difficult, just takes about two days. If you stop completely, the side effects are not too bad. Tramadol is same *** Ultram and has bad side effects, especially seizures. You should not substitute one with another, as this will not help you to achieve your goal of decreasing dependency.Honest about this: Try eating beef jerky in place of the pills, you will be surprised.

Alexia

Don't know if I'm too late. In the same boat and short answer is yes - you can use tramadol as a replacement for Vicodin. It won't be the same - and you will get some of the effects - but it will let you sleep at night. I know for a fact that that is an extreme relief for me...

Elliot

No. do NOT use trammadol. its will cause withdrawl symptoms to occur, and increase. I was taking it for 7 months, and JUST stopped a few days ago. I am now going throgy massive withdralws and its horrible. Quitting vicodin cold turkey is much safer, and will cause less withdrawl. Talk to your doc!!

What would happen if i take tramadol 100mg tabs with celecoxib 200mg brand name is cobix200?

Brinda

I'm 45 yers old and currently on Tramadol for about 1 yearI'm Insulin dependentMy physician doesn't know that I'm on Tramadol,I don't drink, but what would happen if i drink alcoholthank you

Beaulah

There a few issues involved in your situation that relate to drinking alcohol.First, alcohol can raise your blood sugar, which may be problematic since you are diabetic. As long as you limit your intake to 1 or 2 servings, this probably won't be a serious problem.Secondly, celecoxib is an NSAID (the same class of drugs as aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) On their own NSAIDs can cause irritation to the lining the of the stomach - for example, elderly people experiencing stomach bleeds while on chronic aspirin therapy. Alcohol is also irritating to the lining of the stomach. When you combine the two, you increase your risk for developing complications.Thirdly, tramadol is a medication that causes CNS depression, with symptoms such as drowsiness, confusion, and impaired coordination. Alcohol is also a CNS depressant, so in this case as well it can increase the risk of complications with the tramadol. While none of these are reasons to completely avoid alcohol, they put you in the situation of needing to be especially cautious if you do choose to drink. It's always a good idea for you physician and your pharmacist to know all the medications you are taking. This helps to prevent dangerous drug interactions and complications.

Chester

Your I.Q. would drop even further than it is now.

Brock

There is a substantial amount of research indicating that interaction between tramadol and celecoxib is likely----the implication being that they should not be taken together.Neither should be taken with alcohol.

Does anyone have any experience taking tramadol amp hydrocodone together? i have a kidney stone and need relief

Jacqueline

I took the tramadol about 5 hours ago and I am still hurting. I am scared of bad side effects. I have googled and came up with conflicting answers. Does anyone have any experience with these pain relivers? Thanks so much!

Hope

tramadol you can take every 6 hrs so if in ur 5th hr you were still hurting taking the hydrocodone would be ok if you have taken narcotic pain relivers before and tolarate them well but dont take both of them at the same time because i know like before i have been told take oxycotin and percocett for the break thru pain so i believe u can take hydrocodone every 4-6 just try to keep on top of the pain dont take them both togther hydrocodone is stronger just take that and cut out the tramdol do that till monday and see the docter and what he recommends or if u dont beleive the ppl on here you can call a local er and ask

Lorenza

you can take both together... i take both for back pain and it works just fine.. If you take these meds for a long pierod though you will want to take Milk Thistle to help clean your liver.

Giuseppe

Go. To. The. Doctor. Monday.Or if you can't wait until Monday because it is that bad, you may consider going to the hospital. Are you really going to listen to advice of people you don't even know? They might say it's ok all day long, but there might be something they don't know about your health history that could end up hurting you if you do it. Just wait out the pain if you can, until you can get to the doctor. Otherwise, consult someone at your local hospital.

Hester

you may take them together. you may feel tired but you will get a lot of pain relief.i, too, am on tramadol, but i also take methadone. i am trying to get off everything but it isn't working very well. i hope you will feel better soon, and as soon as you can stop taking everything, or you too, will be all strung out like i am, i hate it so much!

Carola

My husband had a really bad break in his left leg and took both at the same time by accident. (Took the hydrocodone, forgot, and then took the tramadol.) He ended up with a terrible stomach ache and a high feeling for 6 hours. I am so sorry you are hurting, but I don't suggest taking them together. Can you use a hot pack or something? Take a bath? I know that kind of thing probably doesn't help, but it's better than the side effects of both pain killers....Good luck!

Fae

ive suffered from numerous kidney stones. a few ive ended up in the ER for, a couple i took care of at home simply by drinking alot of beer. it numbs the pain and pushes alot of fluid through. sounds stupid, but it really does the trick. ah, please note... dont take my advice and remain medicated... thats a bad bad idea.

Moshe

You will be absolutely fine as far as the mixing of the 2 goes. Alot of people that I know from Pain Management take Tramadol to supplement another main pain reliever that they are taking. I take 10mg methadone along with either 50 or 100mg of tramadol depending on my pain level.Just be aware that you are adding more to the mix and you will feel a little more groggy Hope you feel better soon!!

Hisako

Probably ok to mix them, but be careful that you don't take more than a couple each.
