Tramadol and acetaminophen each relieve pain, but they do so by different mechanisms. However, there is a high risk of seizure associated with this medication and patients must be well informed of it's any/all side-effects and interactions. It is a combination product used as a mild analgesic. Tramadol is an opioid of sorts, it is very weak and fairly unique. Tramadol is also chemically an antidepressant. It is probably the least addictive opioid and addiction is extremely rare and it is not a controlled substance like morphine, codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and others are. Yes acetaminophen does synergize with Tramadol to some extent but Ultracet, the brand name for tramadol/acetaminophen contains a fairly small amount of tramadol, only 37.5 mg. Regular Tramadol (Ultram is US brand name) without acetaminophen comes in 50 mg tabs/capsules. No more than two Ultracet or Ultram tablets may be taken at one time.
