How effective is tramadol for back pain?

Chu

I am a nurse and have had fibromylagia for many years. I take tramadol about thirty minutes prior to getting up in the morning so that I can get ready for work. I am very stiff in the morning and have a somewhat shuffled gait because my legs and muscles hurt so bad. I also hurt in my upper back/neck area. If I don't take the tramadol and allow it to get into my stystem then it takes forever to get ready because I am in so much pain. My hair is very long and I have to blow dry it for about 20 minutes. If I didn't take the tramadol then I would not be able to hold my arms up for that length of time. It has saved my life. It doesn't get rid of my pain 100% but NOTHING ever gets rid of my pain 100%. It has no adverse side effects on me except I can't take it after about 6pm because it keeps me awake at night. I do not feel high or anything like that on this medication. It just helps me function thorugh the day with minimal pain. I have tried the oxycodones, hydrocodones, etc. They make me feel high, sleepy and just bad. I still sometimes have to take a hydrocodone if I am having an acute flare up but I don't have to take it often. If I do take it then I don't work while I take it and I don't drive. Tramadol allows me to still function as a nurse without the side effects of the other pain meds. Some people say that it was no better than a tylenol for them. Like all meds, it just effects people in different ways. Those people may have more pain than I do.Without the tramadol on a pain scale of 1 to 10 my rating is about a 7 in the morning before taking it; after I have taken it then my rating is about a 3 which I can tolerate. It has been my life saver. If I could not take it then I would have to go on disability becasue I could not function without it. I have had some patients that complained that they still hurt after taking a hydrocodone; the MD changed them to tramadol and it worked wonders on them. (I work with geriatric (elderly) patients). I think some people think because it is not a schduled narcotic then it is not a good pain medication. NOT TRUE. It works well for some and not at all for others. It does have a minimal potential for addiction as do most pain medications. Another plus is that the ultram(brand name for tramadol) doesn't contain tylenol which is heck on your liver. The ultracet(brand name for tramadol with tylenol) does contain tylenol. I take the one without tylenol. The hydrocodones have tylenol as does the percocets. People do not realize the harmful effects that tylenol have on your liver. I try to avoid tylenol at any cost.Try to tramadol ,if it works for you then great. It is a wonder drug and a life saver for a lot of people. If it doesn't relieve your pain then I would let my MD know it is not effective and he will need to try a differnt type of med. If it is a pulled muscle the you may need to use a muscle relaxer for a short time period. Also try warm moist heat to the area 3 to 4 times a day for 20 minutes at a time. This will help too. Hope you feel better soon and hope the tramadol works as well for you as it has for me. If not then do not hesitate to let your doctor know. Good Luck.

Andrea

That is a generic form of Ultram and it's great for back pain

Kati

I, personally, don't think Tramadol is that effective a pain medication. I've heard the same opinion from a lot of people who suffer from chronic pain. However, pain medication reacts differently with different people, so I think it's worth a try. If you don't get results, there are plenty of other pain medications on the market.

Caryl

It's a centrally acting synthetic analgesic compound prescribed for moderate to moderately severe pain. Every pain med. has a different effect on different people. I've had some patients for whom it works. Personally, it was prescribed for me and it made me nervous and jumpy...but that's me.When it comes to pain medication, you have to let your doc. know what, if any, side effects you are having when you are taking a new med. And If it is not effective in relieving your pain, then you need to communicate this to your doc. Communication is key.

Brigitte

It is different for all people. It may work well for many and not so well for others. Lots of pain medication options out there!

Jessenia

If you are talking about muscle pain in your back it works ok, if it is pain from a spine injury or a nerve it's not very good. It won't help much more that ES Tylenol. It's listed as a moderate to severe pain medication but I've found it to be pretty worthless. I've been on it a few times in the past. I know I wouldn't bother taking it over Tylenol and I've been dealing with pain for a long time!!If your doctor puts you on it then try it,,, it must help some people. But don't get your hopes up. It's still addictive, it still has all the downfalls of opiates without the effectivenessHere are a few sites that may help youwww.webmd.com/back-pain/guide/paihealth.discovery.com/centers/painspine-health.comThis link will give you all the info you want on Ultramwww.pdrhealth.com/drugs/rx/rx-monBut when drug adddicts don't even like it you know it can't be very strong!!

What is tramadol hcl acetaminophen used for?

Jarred

Tramadol hydrochloride and acetaminophen tablets combine two analgesics, tramadol 37.5 mg and acetaminophen 325 mg.Tramadol is a centrally acting synthetic opioid analgesic. Although its mode of action is not completely understood, from animal tests, at least two complementary mechanisms appear applicable: binding of parent and M1 metabolite to µ-opioid receptors and weak inhibition of reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin. Thus, tramadol has mu-opioid agonist activity. While, acetaminophen is a non-opiate, non-salicylate analgesic.Nonetheless, tramadol hydrochloride and acetaminophen tablets, a tramadol-containing product, can be abused and may be subject to criminal diversion. As for the prescribed usage, it is mostly given to relieve moderate, acute pain such as pain following dental or surgical procedures. Tramadol and acetaminophen each relieve pain, but they do so by different mechanisms. However, there is a high risk of seizure associated with this medication and patients must be well informed of it's any/all side-effects and interactions. Also, prescribing this medication, over 5 days of dosages for acute pain is unreasonable.Good Health To You!

Mammie

A centrally acting analgesic that treats mild to severe pain. The acetmainophen boosts the tramadol's effects. The effects also begin more quickly than generic tramadol and last longer because of the acetaminophen

Garland

It is a combination product used as a mild analgesic. Tramadol is an opioid of sorts, it is very weak and fairly unique. Tramadol is also chemically an antidepressant. It is probably the least addictive opioid and addiction is extremely rare and it is not a controlled substance like morphine, codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and others are. Yes acetaminophen does synergize with Tramadol to some extent but Ultracet, the brand name for tramadol/acetaminophen contains a fairly small amount of tramadol, only 37.5 mg. Regular Tramadol (Ultram is US brand name) without acetaminophen comes in 50 mg tabs/capsules. No more than two Ultracet or Ultram tablets may be taken at one time.

Breana

It's primary indication is for pain management. There are a number of off label uses like:diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, fibromyalgia, restless legs syndrome, opiate withdrawal management / Anti-Depressant withdrawal aid (proven to be effective, especially with withdrawal from its distant relative Venlafaxine (Effexor)),migraine headache, obsessive-compulsive disorder and premature ejaculation.

Jammie

Tramadol (INN) (pronounced /ˈtræmədɒl/) (Tramal, Ultram, Ultram ER, Mabron, Ralivia, Ryzolt, Tradonal, Tramacet, Tridural, Medtrap injs 1ml/2ml and tabs, Ultracet, Zamadol, Zydol, Zytram) is a centrally acting analgesic, used for treating moderate to severe pain.Tramadol was developed by the German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal GmbH in the late 1970s.[1][2]Tramadol possesses agonist actions at the μ-opioid receptor and affects reuptake at the noradrenergic and serotonergic systems.[3][4][5] Tramadol is a compound with mild and delayed μ-agonist activity.Tramadol is a synthetic stripped-down piperidine-analog of the phenantherane alkaloid Codeine and, as such, is an Opioid and also a pro-drug(Codeine gets metabolized to Morphine, Tramadol gets converted to M-1 aka O-desmethyltramadol). Opioids are chemical compounds which act upon one or more of the human opiate receptors(the euphoria, addictive nature and respiratory depression are mainly caused by the Mu(μ) 1 and 2 receptor. The opioid agonistic effect of Tramadol and its major metabolite(s) are almost exclusively mediated by the substance's action at the μ-receptor. This characteristic distinguishes Tramadol from many other substances (including Morphine) of the opioid drug class, which generally do not possess Tramadol's degree of subtype selectivity.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultracet

Is tramadol hcl for dogs the same for humans?

Isiah

My dog was prescribed this and since she can't tolerate a lot of meds I am trying to look it up but all I am finding is Tramadol for humans and it says it hasn't been approved for dogs by the FDA. Is this not the same Tramadol that is given to humans?

Adaline

Yes, they are the same drug compound. Why you cannot find it for dogs is because tramadol is only a medication that has labeled use for humans. It's use as a mechanism for pain control in a veterinarian setting is considered off label. There are many medications that are used by vets in their furry patients that are human medications that do not have a veterinarian version. The drug is still manufactured by the same people who make the tramadol for people. Clinical trials have of course been performed in human patients (if not then it could not be on the market), it is just no one has done clinical trials on dogs or cats or whatever in the way of its efficacy for those animals. There should be no major issues with your dog taking this medication unless your dog has some type of seizure disorder. Just give it a try. Tarmadol is different from most opioid pain medications because it is part opiate and part SNRI, which is probably why your vet wants to try her on it. The SNRI component can in many cases help to minimize the side effects of the opioid agonist component. Also, since I am not certain what the reason for your pup needing this script for, I am just curious if this is going to be used to treat some form of chronic pain or if this is just for an accute situation (I.e. she just had surgery, sustained an injury, etc.). If this is for long term treatment, then that is most likely why your vet chose tramadol. If it is for an accute issue, then was most likely prescribed because of intolerance to NSAIDs as well as traditional opoid pain medications.I can tell you that in regards to pain control, there have been some other drugs which have shown very effective for pain control used in an off label/investigative manner. Something like gabapentin may be an option. If the tramadol does not work out, or if you feel uncomfortable with it, then you can ask your vet about gabapentin.Just from a personal and not professional aspect, I can tell you that I take Tramadol every day and have no negative side effects from it. Also, after sustaining a Hills-Sac fracture to his tibia, my dog (whom i love like a child and would do anything to protect) was given both tramadol and Mobic for pain and he had no negative responses from either drug.

Belinda

Yes its the same. Just beware, if your dog has ANY history of seizures do NOT use. My vet killed my dog, because she prescribed this for my 5 year old dog, knowing a history of seizures. I was not aware of any risk or danger until after my dog died 2-3 days later, and I personally researched this. I wish I had enough money for an autopsy and a lawyer... ..Sorry I went off on a tangent, but I am still so upset about this, and this was 1 year ago.

I am allergic to coedine is it safe to take tramadol hcl 50 mg?

Celestina

I will have need a hip replacement in Oct. gbut till then the pain is incredible. Am taking davrocet with little result. Doctor suggested tramadol but there is a warning if allergic to coedine. I am allergic to coedine. Can I take the tramadol or do you know of an other safe pain-killer, please.

Nola

Ask your doctor to prescribe you a non-coedine based pain killer

Kayleen

Yes, but only if you take a triple dose.

Pok

just tuff it out

Jolanda

Percodan? Vicodin? Ask your pharmacist about drug allergies and cross-reactions -- they know all of that stuff and they can recommend other pain killers for you to have your doctor prescribe.

Buffy

Your doctor is the one who should be advising you on the drugs you are taking. If he is not available, talk to the next best person, a registered pharmacist.

Avery

It is NOT SAFE TO TAKE tramadol if there is a warning if allergic to coedine. When you were at the pharmacy, why didn't you ask the pharmacist about this. This is the pharmacists' responsibilities as well as your doctors.Did you tell your doctors that you are allergic to coedine? You need to tell your doctors, every time before he/she writes a prescription, because the doctors cannot remember everything.

Geri

I am allergic to coedine also, but have taken tramadol without any ill side affects. I would talk to Pharamacists about this today. But in my experience, did me good, not bad.You should talk to Dr. too. It all depends on what you were allergic too. IE, allergic to Tylenol 3 and cough meds w/ codiene but did ok with synthetics. Hopes this helps.

Can person take tramadol presribed to a dog?

Charis

My dog was perscribed tramadol HCL 50mg tablets for post op but he no longer needs them. Now one of my friends asked if she could have them. Both her and I have had tramadol pprscribed to us as people, will it be harmful if she takes the tramadol given to the dog????

Despina

I wouldn't want too. The dosage may be incorrect.

Elvie

I think you can use tramadol while your dog has severe pain (for example injured) and it can`t stand it,so don`t think over it take it with less dosage!I did in this way entered online pharmacy and ordered tramadol without prescription! here best prices linkfrog.net/tramadol

Isiah

Tramadol is a drug, used by dogs AND PEOPLE, works just the same, I tested it (F a licence) I work with facts/results. same effects work both ways, you just way more than your dog (probably) so take more (start with 1, work up, wait an hr/2 between. I am not a dr so play it safe)

June

that particular medication was prescribed to the dog.. NO, it is not ok for either of you to take that medicine.Taking it would otherwise be prescribing/practicing without a licence. If she has a script for it, then she needs to go down to the pharmacy and get some tramadol

The upper limit on dosing is 100mg at a time, 400mg per day. Any more risks seizures.Tramadol might make someone feel a little lightheaded and dizzy. It isn't strong enough to make you high.
