Should i take paxil with tramadol?

Miyoko

I currently take paxil for anxiety, but also my pain specialist prescribed me Tramadol for my back pain, but I've heard this can be a dangerous combination? Does anyone know if these can be taken together- I'm fixing the anxiety, but am now back in pain.

You shouldn't take opiates with SSRI medications because of a condition called Seratonin Syndrome, which can be fatal. Does your pain specialist know you are on the Paxil? Tramadol MAY be okay, because it is not technically an opiate, but binds to some of the same receptors. If your pain doc knows you are on the Paxil and prescribed the Tramadol anyway, then it is probably okay, but you can call his office and ask if you are worried. If not, then for sure call and tell him. Here is the Wikipedia on Seratonin Syndrome, in the meantime: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seratonin_s

Ask you doctor or pharmist!

It's not reccommended to take Paxil with Tramadol. There is a risk for a dangerous side effect called seritonin syndrome. I would discuss this with the pain specialist and suggest another drug would be a safer alternative. <snip>Serotonergic Drugs: Based on the mechanism of action of paroxetine hydrochloride and the potential for serotonin syndrome, caution is advised when PAXIL is coadministered with other drugs or agents that may affect the serotonergic neurotransmitter systems, such as triptans, linezolid (an antibiotic which is a reversible non-selective MAOI), lithium, tramadol, or St. John's Wort.
